Madaket is quieter and less crowded than other areas of the island, and Smith's Point is especially tranquil.  Because it is surrounded by water, Smith's Point is protected from heavy car traffic.  Smith's Point also is outside the designated air traffic routes, so visitors hear the ocean rather than airplanes.  With its location on the west end of the island, Smith's Point enjoys spectacular sunsets.

Madaket offers wonderful access to the water.  There is a public launch point for small boats on Hither Creek, just over the bridge leading to The Scallop.  There is also a public launch point for larger boats (with a ramp for trailers) a few blocks away, in Madaket Harbor.  See About Nantucket for information on boat rentals.

The Scallop is a short walk to the Westender, a restaurant-bar-convenience store located near the intersection of Madaket Road and Ames Avenue.  The bus stop is across the street, offering a convenient way to get to town without dealing with the traffic and parking issues downtown.  The same location marks the end of the Madaket bike path, which is part of Nantucket's remarkable network of bike paths connecting the town with the outlying beach areas.
